Among the existing range of alternative technologies, renewable fuels renewable fuels will have an essential role to play in decarbonizing transport, but what are they?
Fuels have been powering the transport sector for over 100 years, thanks to unique qualities including unrivalled energy density, ease and safety of use, and an extensive and resilient infrastructure across Europe for their production, distribution and storage.
While conventional fuels are made from petroleum, renewable fuels are of non-fossil origin. These fuels are sustainably produced from municipal or organic waste, sustainable biomass, renewables and capturedCO2. They emit little or no additionalCO2 during production and use. What's more, since theCO2 they emit into the atmosphere during combustion is circular, these fuels are carbon-neutral.
These fuels will make a substantial contribution to the EU's climate neutrality objective, and will considerably improve security of energy supply by gradually limiting imports of oil and oil products.
There are now dozens of low-carbon fuel projects and plants across Europe, and in some European countries they are available to consumers at the pump.
